With so many different types of engineers out there, it’s difficult to understand what environmental engineers do, and why their role is so important. Environmental engineering is concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse environmental effects, like pollution. This type of engineering also works at improving environmental quality. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, environmental engineers work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control.
Environmental Engineering Has Been Around For Thousands of Years
This profession has been around since the beginning of time, at the least the practices of it. As people built and moved into semi-permanent living environments, they’ve had to provide clean water, sanitary waste disposal, and mitigate sewage from entering gardens, living spaces, etc… Over time, with the advance of civilization, congested cities and large agriculture areas learned how to work with air quality and soil contamination.
Important Responsibilities of Environmental Engineers
Environmental engineers work hard to prevent the release of harmful chemical and biological contaminants into the air, water and soil. They must have extensive knowledge of the chemistry and biology of the potential contaminants and of the industrial or agricultural processes that might lead to their release. They must also be able to detect the presence of pollutants and track them back to their source.
Once the environmental engineer identifies a source of contamination, it must be stopped or significantly reduced. Environmental engineers often work with businesses to determine ways to avoid or reduce the production of pollutants or to separate them so they can be disposed of in a safe manner.
